The senior histotechnologist will precisely and accurately perform a variety of routine and specialized histology techniques and procedures. This position requires the production of the highest quality of embedding, microtomy, tissue grossing, tissue processing, H&E staining, special staining, equipment maintenance and record retention.
Duties and responsibilities
Knowledge regarding fixation of tissue specimens and examination and placement in cassettes of tissue specimens.
Embedding of tissue specimens in paraffin or other embedding mediums for sectioning with a microtome.
Ability to section tissue blocks either on a rotary or sliding microtome.
Ability to prepare frozen sections on a cryostat.
Detailed knowledge of the process which requires staining of a large number of sections with hemotoxylin an eosin on a routine basis.
Exercise quality control of sections prepared by other technicians.
Knowledge and familiarity with special stains such as mason trichrome, stains for microorganisms, elastic tissue stains and other special stains.
Process tissues and prepare histopathology slides for Pathologists to examine. These include hemotoxylin and eosin (H & E) stained slides as well as special stains, such as mason trichrome, stains for elastic tissue, stains for microorganisms and others.
Maintain logbooks, work records, slide files, and paraffin block files in a manner that will meet the needs of the medical and legal professions as to identity and chain of custody.
Perform and keep records of quality control related to procedures, methods, reagents, equipment, and a complaint file as required by State of Florida and Federal (CLIA) standards.
Maintain or order all equipment and supplies for the laboratory.
Dispose of used and/or old reagents (toxic and chemical waste) in a manner acceptable to the University of Miami, and to the State of Florida, OSHA, and Federal Standards and to keep records (where required) of the same.
Attend staff and educational meetings within the Division of Tissue Bank within the Department of Orthopaedics.
Report all accidents to HR and QA and as required.
Any additional duties in connection with operation of histology laboratory as may be required by the laboratory Director or Director of the Tissue Bank or their designees.
Minimum of 2 years college and completion with certification of histology training program. Registered as a medical technologist and licensed by the State of Florida. Familiarity of special stains and applications of the same. Possess the administrative ability and personal qualities which allow for a smooth and easy interaction with pathologist employed by Dade County Medical Examiner’s Offices. Familiarity with research requirements of the Department of Orthopaedics Tissue Bank which include knowledge of processing and preparing microscopic slides from bone specimens.
Primarily a quiet laboratory oriented work environment. Some evening and weekend work required to ensure customer commitments and goals are met.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit; stand for prolonged periods of time. The employee may occasionally be required to pull, lift and/or move up to 20 pounds.
